The Birth of Women’s Work
It has been a while since I have stood at a starting line. And here I am.
Women’s Work has been a long time in gestation. And today, 3 September 2024, it is born into the virtual world.
Women’s lives, my life as a woman, the lives of the many amazing women that mine regularly collides with as well as those I read about have fascinated me since I was eighteen and happened to sign up for Women’s History 101 in my first year at university.
I had moved far from home to go to university, to another state in a distant part of the US. I imagine that being offered this ‘balcony view’ of women’s lives throughout history, a view I had never considered before, was particularly formative for me as I was having my first experience of being a woman outside of, and far away from, my family.
Women’s creative lives, their working lives, domestic lives, their scholarship, their cunning, their wisdom, innovation and their seemingly infinite resourcefulness. Names and stories I had never heard before collided with my own awakening as an adult woman and took deep rootedness in me.
Now I am nearly forty years down the road of life since that awakening. In those years I have had the great privilege of accompanying many women as a coach, a friend, group facilitator, a mother, an aunt and a daughter. I have lived my own life as a woman – moving to a new country at 26, getting married, becoming a mother to two daughters, getting divorced, being self-employed for 20+ years, travelling considerably for work and pleasure, recieving a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, caring for my elderly parents from a distance; and many more of life’s sadnesses and delights.
Women’s lives continue to fascinate and compel me, and with my daughters now grown and financially independent, and the mortgage on the home I have lived in since 1997 paid off, I am grateful to be able to choose to spend my final working years hosting spaces in which women can tune into themselves more deeply, so they are more able to align their lives with what they truly care about; letting that deep knowing guide their choices and actions in the world.
In Women’s Work I am offering 1:1 work with women, a core element of my work in variety of settings for more than 30 years. There will also be ‘Life-Labs’- small, topic focused coaching groups, and also four annual, free, seasonal workshops for women of all ages. Most of my work will be offered online via Zoom or by telephone – with occasional in person workshops in Scotland and the north of England. Coaching clients are very welcome to see me in person at my home-office in Edinburgh.
My vision for Women’s Work is that we, as individuals and a global, inter-generational community of women, can support ourselves and one another to live as our boldest, truest selves in the world and use our time and energy in the interest of what and who we truly care about.
It is easy to contact me, if you would like to discuss possibilities or understand any of what what is written on my website in more detail.
